Bushfires, logging and the railway in Whittlesea VIC
The railway opened in 1889 to move timber from Kinglake and the surrounding region to Melbourne, but it closed in 1959. This logging history left a network of roads across the town. More recently, Whittlesea was a focal point for relief efforts during the Black Saturday bushfires. The fire station here manages operations around Mount Disappointment and Kinglake. The town remains outside the Melbourne Urban Growth Boundary, so it keeps its rural character.
